“For a good film, you don’t need big money or big stars. You just need a good script and a team of beautiful crew members backing it. That’s it”. Says award winning film director Sam Khan who awaits to collaborate with the Taiwanese Government for his next ambitious project.

Budding director Sam Khan is a man on a mission.

A firm believer in tiding in the new wave, he wants to promote the segment of short format films between 1 to 50 minutes.  This is a zone he believes is a beautiful space to be in, because here you don’t need very big people, budgets or stars. “For a good film, you just need a good script and brilliant crew members. You don’t need money or a big ambience. I am trying to create a different path for shorter format films. Because no platform right now, neither Amazon nor Netflix are buying shorter format films, and this segment definitely needs encouragement, because today people from smaller towns like Lucknow, Kanpur are asking, is there a future of making such films?”

“If I or any budding director is trying to make a shorter film, today there is no future in terms of commercial success for it. We need to make this segment bigger so we can encourage people to experiment. Why should we be restricted by a myopic vision of how to make cinema in today’s day and age, where with the emergence of the digital platforms you don’t need to go anywhere. Entertainment is right in your hands.” Khan points out.

Not new to the world of short format films himself, his film “Seven” won the Inspiring film of the year award at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival in 2019. And this London educated filmmaker is now taking his next steps Internationally in this direction with a certain vision.

Collaborating with the Tokyo Government for his next short format film, “Knuckle Duster” This Indo- Japanese Collaboration is going to be shot entirely in Tokyo post the Covid-19 situation lifts. Starring Yash Raaj Singh ( the main negative lead of the Hrithik Roshan starrer War), the film is touted to be India’s most expensive action film shot in the short format.

“Hollywood has taken the format of short films very seriously. They are keeping in mind Film Festivals across the Globe including Berlin, Cannes & Tokyo but India is not producing the kind of films, which we can represent in the International Film Festivals in this format. We need to create something of our own, it’s high time”.

If he had to make an appeal to Bollywood regarding this what would it be? “If we talk about generational change, cinema is changing. If you see the last few films of the bigger stars, they haven’t really worked. Only content is working. Today the audience wants to watch something which is smart. That’s why Netflix has such a huge subscription in India, because the choices are evolving and there is such hunger for good content.”

“I have an appeal to the audiences to also open up to this format, we need people to appreciate work also in this format so it can get the platform it rightfully deserves.  There are people telling beautiful stories even in a one-minute time span when given the opportunity”.

Resting his case, he ends with, “When you talk about shorter films, there is no segment of commercial cinema or non-commercial cinema, because shorter films are not about commercials, they are about conviction. And conviction is the key what we need to go firmly after, and I know they will find the right audience for it once they open up to this whole new world of storytelling”. He convincingly signs out.

Originally hailing from Lucknow, Sam Khan pursued his filmmaking from London and returned to India and assisted directors like Anurag Basu and Vikram Bhatt. Today he has his own production company, Mother’s Eye Production Pvt. Ltd which has released over 25 short format films in a short span of over two years. He is currently in the pre-production stages of making one of India’s most expensive action film in the short format film in collaboration with the Tokyo Government and hails to take this format far with his endeavors.

SYNOPSIS

Their future is illusive…present is deceptive… and their past shall haunt them to death…

A couple (NEIL & ALIA) who believes that marriages are made in heaven discovers the  bitter truth as soon as their married life hits a rough patch.

Neil is a Mumbai based film maker while Alia is a former model who has

adapted a domestic life to enjoy the marital bliss. But because of Neil’s hectic and erratic  schedule, Alia starts suspecting him of having an extra martial affair with his models.

Things turn sour and start affecting their relationship, till finally Neil decides to change

the tide and give an environment to his wife to rebuild faith in him. He gets an  assignment at Alibaug and plans to take Alia along with him so they start their  relationship afresh.

As soon as they reach the exotic location they meet another couple (ROHIT & RIYA) who  have come there to enjoy their vacation. The two couple hit along well, and just when things  had started working well for Neil & Alia, things take a dramatic turn. Alia starts having  weird nightmare, which are horrifying and hard to explain. Neil doesn’t buy her story and on  the contrary starts suspecting her mental status. But Alia is not far off the hook and is  convinced that something is amiss when she discovers that as soon as the sun sets the  cottage staff calls it a day and doesn’t stay back in the cottage. She tries to reason out with  Neil but he is adamant on his stance, that this is all bull shit. To make matters worse, Alia  finds that Rohit is a leech and doesn’t miss a single opportunity to flirt with her in his wife’s absence. Neil on the other hand is too much occupied with his work to pay attention  to his wife.

Soon Alia starts seeing spirits which try to communicate something with her.

Neil is convinced that his wife has lost it. But then something happens which makes Neil fear for his wife. In the thick of night someone attacks Alia. They discover the person is  none other than Michael, brother of Vincent, who is the owner of the cottage. Vincent is  very sorry for the freakish incident and apologizes for his brother’s behavior. He explains  that his brother is a mental patient. Neil asks Vincent about the cottage staff leaving as  soon as it is dusk. Vincent explains that the cottage staff consists of local villagers who are  illiterate and superstitious. Since the unfortunate death of his wife, somehow the rumor  spread out that the cottage is haunted. he doesn’t believe in this kind of shit and is also  worried that it has affected the business lately. Meanwhile the sightings increase and start  taking its toll on Alia. Rohit comes forward and tries to help Neil. He tells him that he is a  psychologist and explains to him that these are nothing but a result of some childhood  trauma. The only solution is to make Alia agree for a session in regression where the root  of the problem can be traced. But its not an easy task as Alia has already started feeling  that some spirit is trying to possess her. Neil on the other is not ready to agree that ghosts  or spirits do exist. He tries to investigate the case by interrogating villagers, but truth is  illusive.

Rohit on the other hand with the help of his wife makes Alia agree for the regression, as she  no longer can take the spooky haunting. As Alya enters the deep state of regression the  spirit attacks her and takes full control of her body. Meanwhile Neil discovers that Michael  is not insane as his brother had claimed him to be. And that Vincent and Vincent have a  shady past and are the actual source of rumors regarding the cottage being haunted. when  Neil reaches the cottage to share his discovery with Alia and Neil, he finds his wife is totally  possessed by the spirit of Vincent’s dead wife. They all try to hold Alia but she is too  powerful to be contained. She knocks on everyone down and heads off to the outhouse.

           

In the outhouse Alia reaches the same spot where Vincent’s wife had been brutally  murdered by Vincent and Michael. Alia virtually sees the horrific incident from the poor  lady’s point of view. Meanwhile Vincent and Michael reach the cottage to teach Neil a  lesson, for he has discovered a truth that they had planned hard to conceal. Vincent is devil  incarnate and will kill whoever shall come in his path. We get to know the real motive of his  murderous streak.

Will Neil & Alia be able to survive the wrath of Vincent?

Or shall they find themselves fatally trapped between this deadly duel between Vincent and  his wife’s ghost?

And what about Rohit and Riya, who actually is not his wife….  Who is more stronger the DEVIL or the GHOST…
